Few domaines carry the weight of history the way Comte Georges de Vogüé does in Chambolle-Musigny, where the family has farmed vineyards for more than 500 years and remains the appellation's most important landowner.

As majority holder of Musigny Grand Cru, the domaine has long set the standard for what the village's most celebrated site can achieve, wines built on haunting perfume, silky texture, and the kind of mineral precision that comes only from Musigny's thin, limestone-driven soils.

1990 is remembered as one of Burgundy's truly legendary vintages, warm and generous enough to ripen an abundant crop perfectly across both red and white wines. On release, critics described the Musigny Vieilles Vignes as dense, tight-fisted and broodingly backward, tannic and concentrated enough that some predicted it would rank among the longest-lived red Burgundies of its era.

That structure has made the wine notably sensitive to storage over the decades, with bottles that have spent their life in cool, stable conditions showing far better than those exposed to heat or fluctuation. Ours has been held in temperature-controlled storage throughout, and well over three decades from harvest, it's finally settling into the layered, complex maturity critics predicted from the start.

"The Bordeaux-like, saturated dense ruby/purple color is followed by a tight-fisted nose and flavors of black fruits, underbrush, minerals, smoke, and new oak. Although extremely concentrated, the wine is broodingly backward, and not fun to drink … yet. This loaded effort should prove to be one of the longest-lived red Burgundies made in the last 20 years."
