Nearly four decades in the bottle and this wine still hasn't broken a sweat. One of the early vintages that convinced serious collectors Dunn's mountain fruit could outlast just about anything else in Napa, and 1986 remains one of the clearest reasons why.

Dunn Vineyards has been Napa's benchmark for long lived mountain Cabernet since Randy Dunn planted his first Howell Mountain vines in 1978, just a few years after leaving his post as Caymus's first enologist.

The vineyard sits 1,800 to 2,000 feet up, above the fog line, where more sun, cooler nights, and better drainage produce fruit built for serious structure.

Dunn's approach has barely changed since the 1980s: no sorting table, minimal intervention, and 31 to 32 months in new oak, a process designed for wines that need decades, not years, to show their best.

The 1986 Howell Mountain bottling was one of the early vintages that proved this approach could work on a grand scale, helping establish Dunn as Napa's standard-bearer for mountain fruit that rewards real patience.

"Two of the most impressive wines in these tastings, both of Dunn's 1986s tasted like 3-4-year old Cabernets rather than 10-year old adolescents. The opaque purple-colored 1986 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain offers awesome richness, mind-boggling intensity, huge tannin, a massive mouthfeel, and a closed yet formidably long, well-endowed finish. This wine could be put in a tasting of 1994 California Cabernets and not stand out as a 10-year old wine. Amazing!"
