Dunn Vineyards has become one of the defining names in California Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines known for structure, patience, and remarkable longevity. Based on Howell Mountain above the fog line, the winery has earned a devoted following among collectors seeking mountain grown Cabernet built to age for decades rather than drink young.
Randy and Lori Dunn purchased a 14 acre parcel in Angwin in 1978, planting Cabernet Sauvignon while Randy worked full time as a winemaker in Rutherford. The Dunns tended the vines on evenings and weekends, and by the end of that year Randy had also agreed to farm and buy fruit from a neighboring property, adding it to their own small harvest. The inaugural Dunn Vineyards Cabernet was released in 1979.
The winery was officially bonded in 1981. Two years later, Howell Mountain became the first sub-appellation of Napa Valley, a designation Randy helped secure alongside Bill Smith of La Jota and other local growers. The AVA boundary starts at 1,400 feet, meaning the vineyards sit above the fog that regularly blankets the valley floor.
Dunn Vineyards has remained a family operation through three generations. Randy's son Mike joined the winery in 1999 and now leads production and vineyard management, while daughter Kristiana came on board after completing a winemaking and viticulture degree at Cal Poly. Both were working full time at the estate by 2005. A third generation joined in 2022, when Mike's son Alex began working alongside his father and grandfather.
The vineyards of Dunn Vineyards are farmed with close attention to elevation, drainage, and vine health, all shaped by the estate's position above Napa Valley's fog line.
Today the Dunn family farms 42 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon on Howell Mountain. Sitting between 1,400 and 2,000 feet, these vineyards receive consistent sun exposure through the growing season while avoiding the more intense afternoon heat that hits the valley floor. The elevation also improves airflow and drainage, reducing disease pressure and protecting against winter frost.
In recent years the estate has moved toward organic farming, incorporating cover crops and regenerative practices since 2022. Sheep are brought in during the off season to graze the vineyard rows, leaving behind natural compost in place of synthetic inputs.
Identified by its red wax capsule, this is the estate's flagship bottling, made entirely from Howell Mountain fruit. Dense and tightly wound on release, it is built for extended cellaring and represents the purest expression of the mountain.
A blend of Howell Mountain fruit with grapes from Coombsville, offering a more approachable entry point into the Dunn style while still rewarding years of patience. Along with names like Harlan, Screaming Eagle, and Bryant Family, Dunn is a fixture on any serious collector's list of Napa cult Cabernets.
Randy Dunn's approach to winemaking has changed little since the estate's early vintages, built around minimal intervention and long, patient aging.
Grapes are picked without the use of a sorting table, a deliberate choice that reflects the estate's hands on approach to farming rather than sorting for flaws after the fact. Skin contact runs a relatively modest 10 to 12 days, with structure instead built through extended barrel aging. Both the Howell Mountain and Napa Valley bottlings spend roughly 32 months in French oak before release. While new oak is used, the Dunn family has shifted toward lower impact wood intended to frame the fruit rather than add overt oak character.
The results are Cabernets with an unusually long aging curve. The Napa Valley bottling typically needs 3 to 4 years to start showing its best and can hold for 15 to 20 years. The Howell Mountain bottling asks for more patience, often 5 to 7 years before it opens up, with top vintages capable of aging 30 to 40 years or longer. Many of the estate's earliest vintages from the late 1970s and 1980s are still drinking beautifully today, a track record that puts Dunn among the best Napa Valley vintages of the last 50 years worth seeking out.
Dunn Vineyards is best known for Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon made in a dense, structured style built for long term aging. The winery is widely regarded as one of Napa Valley's most age-worthy and consistent Cabernet producers.

The Howell Mountain bottling, marked by a red wax capsule, is made entirely from estate fruit on the mountain and is the more structured, longer-aging of the two. The Napa Valley bottling blends Howell Mountain fruit with Coombsville grapes, making it more approachable earlier while still capable of significant cellaring.

Howell Mountain became Napa Valley's first official sub-appellation in 1983, a designation Randy Dunn helped secure. Vineyards sit above 1,400 feet, clear of the valley fog, which gives the fruit consistent sun exposure and better airflow, producing wines with notable concentration and longevity.
