A plush, generous vintage of Harlan that's hit its stride, more approachable in its youth than the more reserved 2010. Dark plums, cherries and graphite wrapped in a rich, enveloping finish, yet perfectly balanced. A vintage that is drinking beautifully right now!

Bill Harlan set out in the early 1980s to build California's answer to a Bordeaux First Growth, and Harlan Estate is the result: a 36-acre Oakville hillside vineyard, dry-farmed across most of its blocks, planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with supporting Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Every wine is aged up to three years in 100% new oak, and the estate has built a reputation over the decades as one of Napa's most consistently celebrated cult producers.

The 2009 has settled into a beautifully plush, generous phase, praised by critics for its soft contours and immediacy even as it continues to develop new layers in bottle.

Critics have noted it's texturally more accessible than the structured, more reserved 2010, with a sweet, inviting attack and ripe red fruit set against darker blackberry, cassis, dried herbs and warm earth, plus a wild, sauvage edge that adds complexity.

Now over 15 years from harvest, recent notes describe a wine that's monumental yet impeccably balanced, drinking beautifully today while still holding real potential to improve over the next decade or more.

Wine Advocate | 97 Points

"The 2009 Harlan Estate is just as impressive from bottle as it was from barrel. Cloves, dark plums, cherries, smoke and graphite add richness and resonance to this powerful, incisive wine. Juicy and exuberant, the 2009 has always had a certain raciness that is impossible to resist. Layers of fruit continue to build to the enveloping, sensual finish. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this hugely delicious wine. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034."

Antonio Galloni | 97 Points

"Stylistically, the 2009 Harlan Estate has quite a bit in common with the 2012, namely soft contours, plush fruit and tons of sheer immediacy. Now with a few years in bottle, the 2009 is just beginning to show the first signs of aromatic development. Deep, creamy and pliant, the 2009 can be enjoyed now, although it is sure to gain complexity over the next two decades."
