Mother’s Day Wine Dinner: For the Mom Who Deserves Cristal and Caviar

May 6, 2025by David Bachus

Because brunch reservations are for amateurs.

This Mother’s Day, skip the crowded cafés and lukewarm eggs. Instead, give Mom what she really wants: a table she didn’t have to set, a meal with zero clean-up, and wines that are way too good to pour by the glass.

We built a three-course dinner around bottles worthy of her legacy.

Ina Garten would totally approve. Julia Child would probably ask for seconds.

Course 1: Blinis, Bubbles, and the First Toast of the Day

Wine: 2007 Louis Roederer Cristal
Dish: Caviar & Crème Fraîche Blinis

You don’t start Mother’s Day with orange juice. You start it with 2007 Cristal. This Champagne is gliding into its golden years - layered with citrus zest, crushed rock, and toasted brioche. It’s rich, refined, and impossible to ignore… kind of like your Mom when you’re not answering her texts.

Why It Works:
The fine mousse + briny caviar + creamy blinis = the high-low combo that luxury dreams are made of. Serve it in white wine glasses (not flutes - Ina would never), and watch Mom glow.

Course 2: For the Chardonnay Mom Who’s Ready to Level Up

Wine: 2009 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc
Dish: Seared Scallops with Spring Pea Purée

This is for every mom who swears by oaky California Chardonnay - but hasn’t met great white Bordeaux yet. The 2009 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is rich, radiant, and layered with lemon curd, grilled pineapple, white flowers, and just enough French oak to feel familiar - but twice as nuanced.

Why It Works:
Scallops seared golden, pea purée for that pop of spring color - this dish practically asks for a glass of Bordeaux Blanc. It’s fresh meets creamy. Bright meets lush. And that green pea purée will have Mom nodding like she’s on Top Chef.

Course 3: Duck, Cherries & a Burgundy Built to Impress

Wine: 2014 JF Mugnier Clos de la Maréchale
Dish: Duck Breast with Cherry Gastrique

Finish strong. Duck breast with a glossy cherry gastrique is rich, savory, and dramatic in all the right ways. Pair it with Mugnier’s 2014 Clos de la Maréchale - a silky, spice-kissed Burgundy from a historic monopole in Nuits-Saint-Georges. It’s floral, earthy, and pure velvet on the palate.

Why It Works:
The wine’s cherry and mushroom notes melt into the duck, and its refined tannins keep the pairing clean and long. And yes, this is the part where Mom tells you this meal is better than any restaurant.
